Benjamin William Leader R.A

Leader was a Worcester landscape painter. He was born Benjamin Williams, but added the surname Leader to distinguish himself from the Williams family of artists, to whom he was not related. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1857-1922, The British Institute, The Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, and at the Birmingham Society of Artists. His paintings were bought by King George V and William Gladstone amongst others and he became one of the most popular and expensive artists of his day.His subjects were usually set in Scotland or the Midlands, but he was especially fond of the landscape around Betwys-y-Coed, Wales. Leader’s early pictures show some Pre-Raphaelite influence, but he later developed a broader, more naturalistic style, which was enormously successful. His paintings are exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery (London), Manchester, Birmingham and many more.
